Unity In The Family Ministry conducts a Environmental Career Worker Training Program as a Gulf Coast Partner Community Based Organization. This program is sponsored by Texas Southern University’s Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ). who was awarded a grant by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; to provide the ECWTP services. The pro-gram will train individuals in asbestos & lead abatement, mold remediation, basic construction and weatherization and Hazardous Waste Operations, OSHA regulations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER).
Never before has there been such a program like the Environmental Careers Worker Training Program. The program targets people from "at-risk" areas and offers them a different route to career choices by training in environmental remediation. The Environmental Careers Worker Training Program consist of a 12 week training program. The program is divided into six weeks of basic skills training and six weeks of Environmental Career Worker Training.
The Environmental Career Worker Training Program is also being conducted in Houston, Detroit, and New Orleans. The Pensacola worker training initiative will be conducted at the Jolene Avant Center of Excellence; With Dr. Calvin Avant and Mr. Tim Grier spear-heading the project. The worker training initiatives will occur at strategic sites across the Gulf Coast and throughout the country with training programs established in Houston, Detroit, Pensacola, Savannah and New Orleans. Texas Southern University’s consortium of training sites will attract and provide training for over 500 participants. Through formal arrangements with HBCUs, community based organizations, unions and industry; Texas Southern University’s program staff will provide environmental health and safety training for under-served populations as well as currently employed workers within environmental remediation and related fields.
Once program participants have successfully completed the six weeks of basic skills training, they will enter into the six weeks technical phase of training (pre-apprenticeship training). Training includes instruction in basic construction and weatherization skills, OSHA regulations, HAZWOPER, lead abatement, mold remediation, and hazardous waste and emergency response. After completing the program students are fully certified and ready to begin work in the field.
